Beauty and the Beast – The Beast's Tale is the second novel in a two-part set. As you might have guessed from the title, it's a graphic novel/manga retelling of the beloved Beauty and the Beast story, with one major twist. Both stories show the main character's thoughts and perspectives on the matter. This time we get to see what the Beast thinks of everything.
One of the things I love the most about graphic novels is that they can make such complex subjects feel so approachable. This is especially true when sharing perspectives with the world and helping people understand what others experience.
Wait, what? There's a manga version of Beauty and the Beast that focuses on Belle's side of the story?! Why didn't anybody tell me about this? But seriously, Beauty and the Beast – Belle's Tale is a refreshing take on the tale, written by Mallory Reaves and illustrated by Gabriella Sinopoli Sinopoli and Studio Dice. Side note: It's also the first in a set. That's right! Beast also has a part to play in this.
The Night Eaters Vol. 1: She Eats the Night comes straight from the creative team behind Monstress. (If you've never read Monstress, allow me to be the first to tell you that you are missing out). Marjorie M. Liu is the author, while Sana Takeda is the artist. They are an absolutely brilliant duo, and I would read anything they put out (seriously – I preordered The Night Eaters Vol. 1 before reading the description).
The fans of Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse should make a point of picking up Demon in the Wood. We've all been waiting for this story – we just didn't realize it. Every villain has an origin story. Sometimes those stories are wrapped up in the main plot. Other times they are tucked away, buried under centuries of trauma and history.
The odds are good that you've heard of the Radium Girls (Ghost Girls'), at least in passing. This is the true story of those women and everything they went through. Written and illustrated by Cy, Radium Girls gives their story a voice and visual elements.
Okay, so I know that V.E. (Victoria) Schwab writing graphic novels is not new (she wrote a tie-in series for her Shades of Magic world), but this is the first time I got to read the issues/volumes as they came out, and I am so very excited about that!
Last of the Irin Volume One kicks off a new series full of gods, feuds, a fight for survival, and so much more. Written and illustrated by Rob McMillan, this is a tale that is larger than life. In many ways, reading this felt reminiscent of the early days of Warhammer, though with more visual elements to guide readers along.
Are you a fan of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman? Well, did you know that there's a graphic novel adaptation of the series in the works? I certainly didn't! It wasn't until I spotted The Subtle Knife on NetGalley that I realized this fantastic creation existed.
