Tapas Tuesday: Master of the Fox Bead

Genre: GL, Romance, Fantasy
Availability: Wait Until Free/Paid
Status: Updating

Summary:

Lee Jinhwa is what you would call an ordinary girl. She loves sports, and like many girls her age, she has a massive crush on one of her classmates. Her life would have gone on like this, in quiet happiness, if not for one event.

One day, Lee Jinhwa was presented with the opportunity to swallow a fox bead, and not knowing what it was – she did it (with her eyes closed!). Now she has a ticked-off fox following her around, determined to get her accumulated power back from this foolish girl.

My Review:

Ahhh, I adore Master of the Fox Bead. If you’re looking for a sapphic romance with a lot of quirks and personality, you’ve got to check this one out! It leans heavily on the forced proximity trope, with a bit of sunshine and grumpy thrown into the mix. There’s also a potential love triangle and lots of mystical drama.

In short, this series is a blast. I’ll admit that I’ve been enjoying it so much that I don’t make it through the “wait until free” period and usually buy the next comic. It’s by far one of my favorites on the site, which says something.

Highlights:

  • Sapphic Romance
  • Fantasy
  • Forced Proximity Trope
  • Demon Fox
  • Potential Love Triangle

Trigger Warnings:

  • Occasional gore

Tapas Tuesdays: Her Ladyship Objects to this Marriage!

Genre: Fantasy, Romance
Availability: Wait until free
Status: Updating

Summary:

Lady Kyriel has never been too interested in love or marriage. She’s strong-willed, stubborn, and a commandant of the Altein Empire. While it is in the regulations that she must get married before considering a promotion, it’s never been in her plans.

In fact, she once made up a ridiculous list of aspects of her ‘ideal man.’ Her best hope was to get her family to stop trying to arrange meetings and the like. Imagine her surprise when a man perfectly meeting those aspects arrived on her doorstep one day.

My Review:

I picked up Her Ladyship Objects to this Marriage! on a bit of a whim, and let me tell you – this series is so much MORE than it may look at a glance. I adore the characters within, including Kyriel and her magical love interest (Idwin).

This series is a lot of fun, with magical shenanigans, politics, fighting, and of course, a heavy romantic plot (that is a slow burn for those looking for this type of romance!). As a bonus, the colors are bright and add quite a lot to the artwork, which enhances the story in my mind.

Highlights:

  • Fantasy world
  • Forced proximity trope
  • Chosen ones/magical mates?
  • Confident leading characters
  • Slow-burn romance

Trigger Warnings:

  • Violence
  • Family Drama

Tapas Tuesdays: My Farm by the Palace

Genre: Romance, Fantasy
Availability: Wait until free
Status: On Break

Summary:

My Farm by the Palace is a sweet series following Hazel Mayfield’s quest to pursue her dream. In case it wasn’t obvious, her dream is starting (and maintaining) a farm. Hazel fell in love with farming when she was a little girl when she quickly found out that she had a knack for it.

Now, as an adult, Hazel has the opportunity to make that dream come true. The only catch is that her land is right next to the castle, and the emperor would love nothing more than to kick her out and take the land for himself.

My Review:

Once again, My Farm by the Palace isn’t a series that I’m entirely caught up on. But I’m working on it! This is such a charming and light series; it makes for the perfect comic to read right before bed (usually following some of the heavier comics I enjoy).

I have so many questions about where this series will lead, and I can’t wait to find out. In the meantime, I adore Hazel’s charm and the way she wins people over through her backing and overall love of what the land can produce.

Highlights:

  • Potential forced proximity trope
  • Land conflicts
  • Farming

Tapas Tuesdays: Solo Leveling

Genre: Action, Fantasy
Availability: Wait until free
Status: Updating

Summary:

Sung Jinwoo is an E-rank hunter, which means he’s the weakest hunter there is – barely a step up from the average human. Yet he hasn’t given up on the hunting job because he desperately needs the money.

Little does he know that one day, one gate (dungeon) will change the world as he knows it. Or, more accurately, change him.

My Review:

Okay, okay. I’ve been hearing nonstop chatter about Solo Leveling. And it makes sense; there’s a TV adaptation on the horizon (I can’t wait), and the writing is pretty solid. Though if I’m being honest, it’s the artwork I love!

Solo Leveling is a dramatic series with lots (and lots) of action and gore. It has some power scaling issues, which I am worried will get worse rather than better as the series continues. However, I’m far from caught up, so I won’t judge that bit just yet. Still, I’ve been happily sitting down to read each new installment as they come my way.

Highlights:

  • High Octane Action
  • Magical Portals
  • Leveling System

Trigger Warnings:

  • Violence & Gore

Tapas Tuesdays: Who Made Me a Princess?

Genre: Fantasy, Romance
Availability: Wait until free
Status: Updating

Summary:

What would you do if one day you woke up in a body that wasn’t yours? Odder still, the body is an infant and a princess at that. Sounds out of this world, right? Yet that is exactly what happened to the protagonist of Who Made Me a Princess?

Princess Athanasia didn’t have the best ending in her book (Lovely Princess), but hopefully, this time around, things will go differently. After all, the knowledge of what is to come should make all the difference, right?

My Review:

I want to call Who Made Me a Princess? A cute series, but it probably has too many heavy undertones for that to apply. Our leading lady has a lot of trauma in her life – both lives. But the good news is that she has an indomitable personality, which means she will win this world over. One person at a time.

In other words, I have been enjoying this series. I’m not caught up yet – I’m still working my way through the “wait until free” comic process. But I must admit that it is one of the ones I most look forward to each week.

Check this series out if you like isekai, redemption stories, and quests for survival (with odd twists).

Highlights:

  • Coming of Age
  • Isekai
  • Discarded princesses
  • Magical Drama

Trigger Warnings:

  • Violence
  • Parental death

Tapas Tuesdays: Scintilla Desiderata Comics

Genre: Slice-of-Life, Comedy
Availability: Free
Status: Completed (?)

Summary:

Who doesn’t need a slice-of-life comic about plates and science humor? Scintilla Desiderata Comics is a funny and super relatable series that follows the life of a lady and her cat. Notably, the lady is busy coping with adulthood and bipolar disorder.

To my knowledge, Scintilla Desiderata Comics is no longer updating, at least not on Tapas.

My Review:

Scintilla Desiderata Comics is one of my favorite comics, even if it is complete. It’s fun, light, and has a dose of relatable humor. If you’ve ever dealt with mental health issues or an oddball cat, you’ll be able to smile at the events that happen within this comic.

Major bonus points for the bipolar representation and the adorable cat, because duh.

Highlights:

  • Slice-of-Life
  • Humor
  • Cat!
  • Plants

Tapas Tuesdays: Cassandra Comics

Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy
Availability: Free
Status: Updating

Summary:

Cassandra Comics is a slice-of-life comic series that follows the one and only – Cassandra. The adventures are all very human, often revolving around hair humor/struggles and other relatable events. And, of course, it all has a comedic lens.

My Review:

I’ve been reading Cassandra Comics for years now. In truth, I’ve been reading the series longer than I’ve been on Tapas – this site just made it easier for me to follow (most of) my favorite comics in one location.

As I’ve already mentioned, Cassandra Comics is a slice-of-life-style series heavily infused with humor. I adore Cassandra’s writing style, artwork, and sense of humor, and thus find it to be a delightful series to follow.

The struggles portrayed in Cassandra Comics are super relatable, such as frizzy hair days, hat hair, clothing battles, and more. One of the best bits about this series is you can read them out of order/context and just enjoy them for what they are. Therefore, it’s a minimal commitment to get going; you can choose any point to get started.

Highlights:

  • Slice of Life
  • Humor
  • Cute Artstyle

Tapas Tuesdays: I Can See Your Death

Genre: Romance, Fantasy
Availability: Wait Until Free/Paid
Status: Updating

Summary:

Essie Ash has always been able to see when and how people would die. It’s not comforting to grow up knowing, but she’s learned to cope with it. More importantly, she’s found ways to save those she could. A gentle warning here and there can go a long way, especially when people know to listen.

However, nothing in Essie’s life could prepare her for the adventure she’ll embark on. And it all starts with a prince on the run ending up at her doorstep. To solve the mystery of her abilities, Essie will follow this mystery prince back to the capital – and danger.

My Review:

I was initially drawn to I Can See Your Death because of the lovely artwork – and trust me, that alone would have made this series worth it. But the characters and plot immediately sucked me in. It didn’t take long for me to get hooked on this series!

Essie has a dry humor and a stoic personality. You’d think that would make her dull to read about, but I adore her. Likewise, I find the mystery around her abilities fascinating and look forward to learning more about them. The romantic subplot is a plus, adding tension and more human elements throughout.

I Can See Your Death is the perfect series to check out if you love old-world fantasy vibes, royalty battles, and fantasy romances.

Highlights:

  • Fantasy World
  • Princes and Royalty
  • Grand Adventure
  • Romantic Subplot

Trigger Warnings:

  • Death
  • Violence

Tapas Tuesdays: The Innkeeper Chronicles

Genre: Action, Romance, Fantasy
Availability: Paid
Status: Updating

Summary:

Dina Demille runs an extraordinary inn that masquerades as a quaint bed and breakfast to those who don’t know the truth. That truth? The Inn, Gertrude Hunt, caters to aliens visiting Earth. It’s Dina’s job to keep these guests safe while ensuring they break no rules.

When the dogs in Dina’s neighborhood begin to die, one by one, Dina knows something dangerous is nearby. While she shouldn’t get involved, she just can’t let it go. And when the stubborn werewolf ignores her pleas, she takes things into her own hands.

The Innkeeper Chronicles is based on Ilona Andrews’ Innkeeper series, which is several novels long at this point.

My Review:

As a huge (massive) fan of Ilona Andrews’ Innkeeper series, you better believe I signed up for The Innkeeper Chronicles the second it was available. The series is only a few months old at this point, but it has absolutely lived up to my expectations thus far.

This series is magical, dark, and fun. It has a little bit of something for everyone, including vampires, werewolves, a magical inn, some politics, danger, and even a romantic subplot. It’s one of my favorites and is totally worth checking out.

Not every scene follows the books, but I’m okay with that. It’s keeping things fresh while ensuring that it fits a more visual storytelling format. That’s what happens with adaptations, right? As long as it stays true to the core, I will never complain.

Highlights:

  • Magical/Sentient Building
  • Part of a longer series
  • Magical Characters
  • Drama
  • Romantic Subplot

Trigger Warnings:

  • Animal death
  • Graphic details

Tapas Tuesdays: The Little Trashmaid

Genre: Comedy
Availability: Free
Status: Updating

Summary:

The Little Trashmaid is essentially the Little Mermaid, but taking pollution into account. Tidy (the trashmaid, obviously) has many endearing and sometimes heartbreaking adventures with her two human friends. It’s chaotic and primarily nonverbal, making it an approachable comic for all readers.

This series tackles serious subjects, such as pollution, conservation, and the need for cleaner water. If these topics are near and dear to you, you’ll likely enjoy the commentary in these comics.

My Review:

The Little Trashmaid is one of my favorite webcomics of all time. For the record, it isn’t just on Tapas. It’s also on Webtoon and Patreon (yes, I’m a subscriber to their Patreon and want to support their message). It’s incredible and admittedly quite heavy at times, but I cherish it.

This series is essentially vital commentary wrapped up in a more approachable lens. It’s easier to see why cleaning up beaches matters when watching a cute little mermaid run (erm, swim) around through all the debris. The sense of humor and slice-of-life nature of the comics helps to keep them from getting too heavy, despite the subject material.

I did a longer write-up about The Little Trashmaid for Monkeys Fighting Robots, which says a lot about how much I adore this series. So, go check it out (the series, I mean, though you can also check out my article).

Highlights:

  • Little Mermaid with pollution
  • Slice of Life
  • Quirky and Endearing Characters

Trigger Warnings:

  • Pollution
  • Heartbreaking Scenes
  • Damage to mermaids and other sea critters caused by pollution and trash.
