Summary:
Many a cult have attempted to make a bargain for immortality. Likewise, many occultists have likely tried to capture greater beings as a method of obtaining this immortality. This is the story of one group who tried and succeeded.
However, they didn’t capture the entity they were aiming for. While they may not realize it, this was for the best. However, after capturing and imprisoning Dream for over seventy years, they did kick off a series of events.
Review:
I’m pretty sure I’ve heard about The Sandman my whole life (I just checked, and yep – the series is older than I am). Despite this, I’ve been REALLY bad and never read it. I’ve always meant to, but you know how life is.
Preludes & Nocturnes is the prequel to the famous Sandman series, and holy crap does it hit hard. I can see why so many people have gushed about it over the years. Likewise, I can see how it spurned a generation of creators.
Most of Preludes & Nocturnes covers the backstory of how Dream came to be captured – and what happened during his captivity. However, there are also a few short stories, almost vignettes, that occur after he is free. I enjoyed both sides of this story equally (though perhaps I enjoyed the Constantine cameo more than I would like to admit).
I have a long way to go in this series, and I love that. I already have The Doll’s House ready to read. I have to decide whether or not I will watch the adaptation once I’m done (yea or nay?).
