Summary:
Four girls with little in common are about to change their lives forever. Hikaru, Umi, Fuu, and Tokyo were all just average schoolgirls before they were summoned. Now, they’re battling for the magical realm of Cephiro.
The kingdom’s princess has been captured. This is horrible enough on its own, but to make matters worse, she’s the reason the kingdom has been safe for so long. To keep Cephiro safe, they must rescue Princess Emeraude.
Review:
So, apparently, Magic Knight Rayearth I Vol. 1 is getting republished, so now seemed like the perfect time to give the series a try! I know I’m a decade late to this one; please don’t judge me too harshly.
You know, it’s funny. I remember growing up and reading many CLAMP novels, so I don’t know how I missed Magic Knight Rayearth I. Yet here I am, reading it way past its release. Oh well.
Onto the actual review. You can tell immediately that this story was made in the 90s/early 2000s. It has all the earmarks, from schoolgirls going to battle to the overall vibe. It’s a nostalgic romp, to say the least.
My biggest criticism would be the lack of character development. I finished Magic Knight Rayearth I Vol. 1, feeling like I didn’t really know any of the girls. So, while the adventure was fun, it overall felt a little flat and disingenuous to me.
Highlights:
- YA Adventure
- Magic & Fantasy
- Shojo
Will I continue the series? Nah
