A Hunter Has Come to Town in Something Is Killing The Children #2
Monsters are real, and they’re hungrier than ever. Heroes are also real, though they’re not quite what we expected. At least, the one in Something Is Killing The Children #2 certainly doesn’t appear to be your everyday hero.
Something Is Killing The Children has been a dramatic and disturbing tale. It introduced us to a world where the monsters seem to prefer to eat little children – and they’re not always considerate enough to leave behind a body to identify. It’s a sad day when you consider that a slight win.
Writing
It’ll be no surprise to hear that Something Is Killing The Children #2 was an emotional read, just like its predecessor. It would appear that James Tynion IV is not interested in pulling punches. And we’re not complaining about that fact.
Something Is Killing The Children #2 took a step back from the horror – in some ways. Instead, it switched the focus, laying the groundwork for something much bigger and darker. Something that we know must be looming just out of sight.
This issue quickly proves that there’s more than meets the eye. In a world of monsters and their hunters, that is saying something. Losing a child to a grisly tragedy may seem like the worst thing that could ever happen – until you consider the idea of never knowing what happened to them.
That is the world that Tynion IV has laid out for us. And he did so in a beautiful yet eerie way. This is quickly becoming a series that is impossible to look away from. No matter how badly you may want to do exactly that.
Art
The artwork behind Something Is Killing The Children #2 perfectly fits the tale within. It’s dark and disturbing, not afraid to show the violence within. But likewise, it isn’t afraid to simply imply something and let our minds do the rest.
If there’s one thing this issue does brilliantly, it’s increasing our awareness – and fear – of the unseen. It’s a poignant reminder that just because we can’t see the monsters lurking in the shadows doesn’t magically mean they’re not there.
Whether Dell’edera was the lead artist behind these decisions, Miguel Muerto was the colorist. Finally, Andworld Design provided the lettering for this issue. Their combined efforts are why this series’s tone has been so spot-on.
Conclusion
Something Is Killing The Children #2 is a disturbing tale. But it also told us a ton of important information about this world full of monsters. I still have dozens of questions about the world, the monsters, and this…curious hunter. But I have no doubt that all of these questions – and more – will be answered with time.
The conclusion of this issue did admittedly raise more questions and has left me anxious to see what will happen next. And plenty of fans will be out there asking the same questions.
