A Father/Son Journey Begins in Sea of Stars #1
Sea of Stars is an all-new series from some of the bigger names in comics today. So, obviously, we just had to give this series a try! And from this one issue, it’s safe to say that this series already has much going for it.
Sea of Stars #1 has space truckers, family dynamics (and issues), alien artifacts, and a few aliens. In short, it’s got a little bit of everything. Or at least it feels that way! The series follows Gil and his son, Kadyn. Gil didn’t want to have to bring his son along on his latest haul, but he didn’t have much of a choice. The end result? An adventure far beyond what either of them could have hoped for – or feared.
Writing
Two main things drew my attention to Sea of Stars. One of those major points? The authors. Jason Aaron and Dennis Hallum teamed up to bring us this unique and epic journey through space. That probably says a lot right there, doesn’t it?
Sea of Stars #1 was so incredibly unique. I’m almost not even sure where to begin. The introduction was unexpected…but that was actually a good thing. It subverted all of my expectations. Turning it into something new and not nearly so predictable. That was a brilliant move.
We didn’t get a whole lot of time to get to know Gil and Kadyn – what with the world and plot also being introduced alongside them. However, we didn’t need much time to understand the basics about them. Aaron and Hallum could tell us so much about them using just a few words.
The world itself, or rather, the universe, looks to be an interesting one. I know that they’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of what they will show us. And that just makes it all the more interesting and exciting.
There were some surprise twists in just the first issue. These twists took the series from something that I thought was predictable to something…different. It’s still a journey in space, but it isn’t what I expected. And I actually think I like this version better! I’m looking forward to seeing more of this setting.
Art
The other thing that really caught my attention for Sea of Stars was the cover. It’s simply striking. Admittedly, that alone does a decent job of telling us what this series is about. But that’s not a bad thing!
Sea of Stars #1 was drawn by Stephen Green and colored by Rico Renzi. Together, they brought us the familiar, the strange, and the odd. It was quite the experience. I enjoyed seeing their take on outer space and aliens.
Green’s style of drawing the unknown was both familiar and different. You can see some of the influences here. But you can also see his own style at work. The blend of the two was extremely well done. And it was enhanced by the colors Renzi brought into the mix.
I’ve always been a fan of vibrant colors in the space series, so I might be biased when discussing the color palette here. But honestly? I loved it. The colors were vibrant and so alive. And they really read as being out of this world to me.
Conclusion
If the first issue is anything to go by, Sea of Stars will be a series worth watching. I kind of expected that, just from the creative team involved. But it’s nice to have that confirmed.
I look forward to seeing where Gil and Kadyn’s journey takes them. We’ll surely see more of the universe and these interesting characters in the following issues. Any guesses on what will happen next?
