The Struggle of a Father in Sea of Stars #2
Frequently, when you hear somebody talking about the distance between father and son, you know it to be in the figurative sense. But this statement takes on a whole new meaning in Sea of Stars. All Gil Starx wants to do is take care of his son, but a certain and rather major complication has turned up that makes that a bit difficult for him.
Sea of Stars #2 proves to be just as emotional and intriguing as the second issue. It leaves readers with just as many questions as the first issue. But that is likely a good thing. I know I, for one, can’t wait to see what happens next.
Writing
Sea of Stars #2 proves that there’s no such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to writing. Or at least two cooks certainly aren’t too many. Jason Aaron and Dennis Hallum are co-writing this striking series, and so far, they’ve managed to increase the emotional impact beyond expectations.
If you thought the first issue hit you in the feels, get ready for this one. The second issue reveals more of the backstory for our two wayward characters. It was a bit unexpected but not unappreciated. It added heft to the reason for them being out in space. And it gave us a stronger understanding of the determination behind Gil Starx’s character.
And that’s ignoring the other half of this issue entirely. You see, Gil’s son, Kadyn, seems on an entirely different journey. Having the two so strongly juxtaposed against one another has been fascinating and an excellent show of writing talent.
Art
The artwork for Sea of Stars is easily half the appeal of this series. The covers have already proven striking, as has the artwork inside. And Sea of Stars #2 has some truly memorable scenes.
We may only be two issues in, but it’s enough to leave us grateful that the artistic team has remained the same. Stephen Green’s lines and Rico Renzi’s colors are a brilliant combination – to put it mildly.
These two artists capture space brightly and vividly. Gone are the dreary images with predominantly black backdrops. Instead, there is a variety of hues to dazzle the readers. And amazingly, it doesn’t distract from the emotional intensity of the issue. If anything, it enhances it.
Conclusion
Sea of Stars #2 has taken some risks in storytelling styles, but it has paid off so far. The two different perspectives are made all the more interesting by just how different they are. A fact that will likely only increase as time goes on.
This series has been fascinating so far, and I honestly can’t wait to see the next major revelation. We know this father and son duo still has a long way left in their journeys. And that leaves us to wonder what else they’ll come across.
