Summary:

The Birds of Prey are back together! This time around, a threat from the future puts the very lives of the team at risk, with the first target being the beloved Barbara Gordon. But how can you stop an enemy before understanding their motives?

With Black Canary at the helm, the team assembles for another mission, including Cassandra Cain, Big Bara, Zealot, and Harley Quinn. An original member and another familiar face are back on the team.

Review:

The dramatic adventures of the first volume teased a bigger bad working behind the scenes, and it looks like Birds of Prey Vol. 2 continues to carry that plot. Given that our Barbara Gordon is the first target, it’s hard not to feel a bit invested in how things turn out.

Birds of Prey Vol. 2 is a chaotic adventure, to put it mildly. The storytelling style opened the door to a series of portal adventures, which are fun, chaotic, and highly entertaining. However, while they are interesting, it felt like they lacked some depth.

The newly introduced characters (I’m dancing around this a bit as they’re connected to the villain) were compelling. I doubt we’ll see them again, but that part of the story was very well done.

I’ve been wondering what sort of villain we’d see, given that they’ve been teased for more than a volume’s content. I won’t spoil the reveal, but I will say that I never would have guessed it, not even if you had given me a million years to puzzle over the possibilities.

Artwork:

The portal fantasy storytelling element in Birds of Prey Vol. 2 created a fantastic opportunity for artists. Each new world had its own style, courtesy of a different artist bringing it to life. I absolutely adored this decision; it’s the sort of thing I wish we’d see more often.

Naturally, as each portal created a very different world, the tone and setting changed from time to time. For example, the cartoon-style one enabled many jokes, largely at Big Barda’s expense.

Highlights:

  • Superhero comic
  • Heroines teaming up
  • Epic quest
  • Portals
  • Lots of humor
