Summary:

House of X/Powers of X reforged the X-Men, creating a utopia for all mutants to cherish, regardless of their history. This opened the door to many adventures, as the X-Men and other teams work to keep the peace, protect mutants, and forge alliances.

Dawn of X compiles multiple series (X-Men, X-Force, Marauders, Excalibur, Fallen Angels, New Mutants) into one cohesive read in the recommended reading order.

Review:

At this point, I think I’m fully caught up in what I had read from the Krakoan era (yeah, I hadn’t gotten far before I got distracted, and I hate that). I’m happy to be making new progress with this story and am eagerly awaiting a few anticipated reveals and twists.

Overall, I like where the story is going. You can see the cracks forming as characters make compromises and tackle threats they were probably not prepared for. I won’t say that I love every individual adventure, but that’s what happens with a mixed bag like this. As with my last review, I’ll try to quickly write out my thoughts about each issue.

X-Men : As expected, the first issue was setting the scene, allowing this second issue to really start pushing the plot. Loving how we’re seeing more of the complications, island, etc. And obviously, this one set the stakes.

Marauders : Possibly my favorite arc, for the moment? It’s a little intentionally edgy, but fun. Kate’s trying to find herself, and in doing so, she’s taking the story in a way I wouldn’t have expected.

Excalibur : Again, this is my weakest part of X-Men history (forgive me), so half of my time is just trying to keep up with it all. That said, it’s getting pretty interesting, and I’m enjoying seeing a different side.

New Mutants : More spacefaring fun, but there are a ton of references to the past. If you don’t have a passing understanding of this past, it’s going to feel like everything is going over your head. It’s okay, but that might make the issue feel like it’s just washing through.

X-Force : Quentin Quire and Wolverine on the same team is pretty cool, but then again, I’ve really liked Quentin ever since I read West Coast Avengers (sue me). He’s trying to get away from the Kid mantle, and in doing so has taken a few turns, but it suits the character.

Fallen Angels : It almost feels like Fallen Angels wasn’t written as part of the set. I know they’re technically all different series, but this one feels like an outlier, even with that mindset. I didn’t hate it, but I don’t currently love it either.
