Summary:
Krakoa has fallen, and Professor X is missing. It’s up to those remaining to pick up the pieces and find new ways forward. Rogue has rallied her own group of X-Men, splitting off from the main branch. They don’t agree with those plans. They support them, but they don’t want to be involved.
Together, Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine have come across a new group of mutants, the Outliers. With the help of Nightcrawler and a few others, they may just have what it takes to keep them safe, but a prophecy will make this task much harder than it sounds.
Review:
Okay, there are a few key phrases you can waggle in my face that will get me to read an X-Men series. “Rogue-led” is one of them, and “Written by Gail Simone” is another. So, I knew I was going to check out Uncanny X-Men the moment it was announced.
Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 is part of the larger From the Ashes timeline, following the events of the fall of Krakoa. There are going to be some spoilers about how things all went down, so if you’re not up to date and don’t want spoilers about that, you might want to keep that in mind.
Personally, I adore the team Simone put together here. For the adults, we have Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler. For the kids, we have the new Outliers. One of them has been prophesied to have enough power to destroy everything, making for a compelling and high-stakes adventure. Plus, everybody seems to want a piece of them (probably because of said prophecy).
The story starts out surprisingly sad and somber, and I was expecting that (see: fall of Krakoa, duh). From there, readers get to see the team desperately trying to keep things together for the sake of the next generation. Lots of internal conflicts and debates about the ethics of training, etc. It makes for a great read, and I’m happy this is just the beginning of the story. Likewise, it’s great to see Rogue at the helm of this team. It’s about time.
Highlights:
- Gail Simone
- Rogue-led X-Men Team
- New Mutant Teens (Outliers)
- From the Ashes
