Summary:
Ten years ago, the world changed, and not for the better. It was taken over by darkness, with monsters emerging from the shadows. To make matters worse, people can become these nightmare creatures, adding a whole new level of complications for the survivors.
Enter Val Riggs, a survivor through and through. She is one of the few brave enough to venture out into the real world, ferrying supplies from one town to the next. However, things are about to take a turn in Val’s life.
Review:
If post-apocalyptic horror is your cup of tea, Nocterra is the series for you. I may have only gotten through the first volume (so far), but I can already tell that much! Nocterra Vol. 1 is a heavy-hitting and compelling introduction to this dark world.
The story begins with the world already fallen to pieces. Readers get to learn what happened through flashbacks and explanations, all of which start raising questions. How did Val get here, and what is happening to her sibling? These are the first two questions to come to mind, but they won’t be the last.
Admittedly, I didn’t feel a strong emotional connection to any of the characters. That’s probably the biggest downfall of the series, at least for me. I’m hoping that’ll change in later volumes.
That said, the worldbuilding and atmosphere were intriguing enough to carry most of the story. It’s enough to get me coming back for the next installment in the series. Fair warning, there is a fair amount of exposition in Nocterra Vol. 1, so if that isn’t your preferred style of storytelling, this may not be the post-apocalyptic adventure for you.
Highlights:
- Dystopian Horror
- Monsters in the Dark
- Ferrymen
