Summary:
Joan Peterson has fallen in love more times than she can remember. No, that’s not quite true. She remembers her past loves, at least in the end. Each love and whirlwind romance has always ended with her untimely demise.
The real problem is that her death doesn’t stick. She falls in love, dies a brutal death, and then gets thrown back into the loop to experience it all over again. Different decades, different men, same story.
Review:
If you love horror, romance (with tragedy), and time loops, Love Everlasting Vol. 1 is the story for you. It’s a little bit like Groundhog Day, if Groundhog Day revolved around falling in love.
Right off the bat, Love Everlasting Vol. 1 has readers asking dozens of questions. What is going on with Joan Peterson? Is she cursed, stuck in a loop, hallucinating? The questions pile up, and they certainly don’t ease up as she dives into different iterations of this tale.
Written by Tom King and illustrated by Elsa Charretier, I knew that Love Everlasting was going to hit hard. I don’t think I was quite prepared for how the story chose to unfold, but that’s a good thing. I’m not really sure where the story is going to go, or how far King is going to push it before the end. Likewise, I have no idea what to expect from this adaptation (which I think is still happening?).
Most importantly, Love Everlasting Vol. 1 plays around with classic 1950s romantic tropes in the best ways possible. It’s not heavy-handed with the commentary, but it’s still there. It’s one part a love letter to love letters, and one part a criticism of the time.
Overall, I really enjoyed Love Everlasting Vol. 1–especially the artwork. I’m one hundred percent going to follow up on this series, because I’ve got to see how it ends (please, let it have a proper ending).
