Summary:

Krypton is doomed. They just don’t know it yet. Sure, the higher-ups are well aware that things are taking a turn for the worse, but those actually working down in the mines have no clue what real dangers they face.

Enter Kal-El and his family, they’ve been working hard to understand the problem, and they realized things just in time to try and help people evacuate. Sadly, only Kal-El made it off planet, as far as he’s aware, and now he’s facing down a very different problem on Earth.

Review:

Wow. I love the Absolute Universe. It’s given different creative teams a chance to create whole new spins on beloved characters, and the one for Superman did not disappoint. Absolute Superman Vol. 1 introduces a different history for both Kal-El and Krypton. It also portrays a very different Earth, for that matter.

Written by Jason Aaron, I knew that Absolute Superman Vol. 1 was going to hit hard, but I don’t think I was quite prepared for just how hard this tale hit. The series sure doesn’t shy away from turning Krypton’s destruction on its head, nor is it afraid to throw different enemies in Kal-El’s path.

Overall, I’m enjoying this new take on Superman. He’s an angry hero who doesn’t have the experience of grounding of the version we’re all more familiar with. He’s got a long way to go, and arguably many more threats to contend with before he’ll get the chance to process it all.

Highlights:

  • Superheroes
  • DC’s Absolute Universe
  • New Kal-El Origin Story
  • Jason Aaron
