Summary:
Once upon a time, the wizard known as Ged went by a very different name. He was Sparrowhawk, a young wizard in training who didn’t know (or respect) his limitations. It’s safe to assume that this put him into a fair bit of trouble.
Originally written by Ursula K. Le Guin, A Wizard of Earthsea has now been adapted into graphic novel form, courtesy of Fred Fordham and Clarion Books.
Review:
If you’re looking for a more visual version of A Wizard of Earthsea, this graphic novel adaptation is perfect for you. A Wizard of Earthsea is a classic fantasy tale for a reason, so even if you’ve never read the original, you’ve probably seen its influence in many other tales.
The artwork for this graphic novel adaptation is stunning. Fordham seems to know the material well, knowing when words and narration are needed, and when they’re not. Honestly, if I could buy a few prints from this adaptation, I would. They’re that striking.
The adaptation does a good job of sticking to the heart of A Wizard of Earthsea and following the main beats. It’s well-paced and doesn’t cut too much (that I can recall, but it’s been a hot minute since I read the original).
Long story short: A Wizard of Earthsea: A Graphic Novel is a great way of experiencing this beloved story in a whole new light, and I highly recommend giving it a try.
Highlights:
- YA Fantasy
- Dragons & Lore

You had me at “fantasy graphic novel” can’t say I’ve read the original but it sounds like a fun way to experience it.
