Summary:
A sickness tore through the world, causing what was nearly the end of humanity as we know it. However, there were survivors, but that is just the start. Children born to these survivors often exhibited animal hybrid traits.
Gus is one such child. He was born with deer features and raised in isolation. As a young child, he lost his father and began a new and very dangerous adventure. This post-apocalyptic world is not made for the soft-hearted.
Review:
If you like post-apocalyptic fiction, well, I was going to say you should check out Sweet Tooth, but the odds are good that you’ve already heard of it! Once again, I am behind on the times in actually reading hit series, but at least I got there.
Sweet Tooth Vol. 1 comes out swinging, which is what I expected. The world’s falling hits very close to home, though ironically, it was written before the pandemic. Likewise, Gus’ story doesn’t pull punches, and I have a feeling that has only just begun.
I love Jeff Lemire’s style of writing, and Sweet Tooth Vol. 1 is no exception to that. The story unfolds pretty quickly, but you know that it’s going to get a whole lot deeper before the story actually comes to an end. Lemire captures the horrifying feeling of this world, making it feel all too real and oddly human.
Obviously, I also adored the artwork, which is boldly colored and unafraid to show the worst that humanity has to offer. More importantly (given the setting), it captures that fine line between human-inhabited spaces and areas left to rot.
Highlights:
- Dystopian Fantasy
- Post Apocalyptic Horror
- Made into a Series
- Human-Animal Hybrids
