Summary:

The era of Krakoa may be over, but many heroes are finding their way forward. Prodigy has taken a teaching job. Wolverine is working from the shadows, keeping her people safe. Ms. Marvel is learning what it means to be both Inhuman and mutant.

Unfortunately, many threats lurk in the city, some human, some not so much. These heroes will have to work together if they want to keep the city safe for everyone, mutants, humans, and Inhumans.

Review:

There’s a lot going on in NYX Vol. 2, and I do mean a lot. We have personal dilemmas (Kamala’s family, Laura’s friends/romances, Anole’s hopes, Sophie’s Cuckoo history, etc), new villains, and many twists.

I’ll admit that I wanted to like this volume more than I did. To start with, there was a lot of potential in Hellion as a villain. I didn’t hate how he was handled here, as it was good for Laura to learn non-violent means of handling threats.

However, that was only part of the stories crammed into this final volume. Part of that, I’m sure, is because the series got cut short. But it’s also because they had to tie in at least one larger universe event, courtesy of Xavier and his escape. If you’re not following the other series, you’ll wind up feeling lost there. Even keeping up with everything, his sudden appearance in this series feels jarring.

I can see why it was forced into NYX, as showing Xavier using such hopeful characters is meant to drive home a point. We get it. This isn’t the Xavier we thought we knew and loved. I just wish it hadn’t stolen from NYX’s finale, you know?

The final battle, which Xavier kind of kicked off, was okay. It did feel rushed, partially because of how it all started. There are a few heavy-hitting moments, both physically and emotionally. I’m happy that at least Ms. Marvel’s story is going to keep popping up in Giant-Sized X-Men. I guess we’ll have to see how that goes.

Highlights:

  • From the Ashes
  • Ms. Marvel/Wolverine/Sophie Cuckoo
  • Lower East Side Drama
  • Mutants/Inhumans
