Summary:

The people and creatures of Fairy Tales once lived magical lives, but that was before the Adversary came along. Forced to flee from their homes, they have now resettled in real-life New York City, creating a small town for themselves called Fabletown.

Unsurprisingly, this is not the magical solution to all of their problems. Fitting in with the real world is tough, and infighting and drama are bound to pop up from time to time. This explains how the Big Bad Wolf was forced to take the role of Sheriff.

Review:

I have been told time and time again that I need to read Fables, so I finally sat down and read Fables Vol. 1. The first story is pretty interesting, but I’m thinking that either it didn’t quite live up to the hype, or I just need to keep reading. You know what it’s like when a series has been overhyped to you.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of Fables Vol. 1 is focused on establishing the world and primary characters. There are creative twists on beloved (or hated) characters like the Big Bad Wolf, Snow White, etc. Plus, they haven’t really delved into the whole Adversary part (yet), so there’s a lot of potential still on the table (I know this is an older series, so obviously I know that this has since been revealed).

Simultaneously, the story throws readers headfirst into a murder investigation. It’s a good excuse to watch Bigby pop around town and talk to dozens of characters. I also get the feeling that this is going to be part of the format going forward.

A lot is happening on these pages. We have dozens of individual character backstories, personal dramas, twists, and the world itself. It’s a lot to take in during one volume, but I bet you it evens out soon.

Highlights:

  • Fairy Tales in the Real World
  • Urban Fantasy
  • Twisted Fairy Tales
