Batman #53 brings along the conclusion to the ‘Cold Days’ plot, and I’m honestly a bit torn on how I feel about this one. I was surprised to find myself loving the last couple of issues, but I have to admit that it did get shockingly introspective. Plus any issue that has Mr. Freeze in it is a good issue, in my book. So I was looking forward to the conclusion.
The conclusion…was not what I expected. In a way that’s a good thing. A great thing, really. Who wants to read a comic book where you know what will happen before you even touch it? But at the same time it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for.
I think my biggest problem with the issue was that it was a big heavy handed. That’s probably the best way to describe it. I know Bruce was trying to make a point, and his comparison was meant to make the people stop and think…but still. Perhaps that’s just me though.
I do wish we had been given Mr. Freeze’s reaction to the verdict, and more information about how this whole mess came about to begin with. There’s a chance that the plot isn’t finished, but it felt like it was the ending. Plus, technically those parts were never the main focus of the plot, and thus aren’t actually important. It’d just be interesting to know them.
Still, this was probably one of my favorite Batman plots in the past year, so I can’t really complain too much, can I? I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
