Summary:

Lia just had to pick up her entire life and move to a new country. Sure, she got to move with her family and stuff, but that’s hardly the same as staying where she’s comfortable. Now she’s in Canada, with a new school, a new house, and a body that just betrayed her.

The New Girl is created by Cassandra Calin, the famous webcomic artist. This is her first long-form comic debut, so it’s worth checking out.

Review:

As a huge fan of Cassandra Calin, I had to check out The New Girl. I don’t care if I’m not the target audience, there’s no way I was going ot miss it. The New Girl tells a relatable story about a young girl who just had her entire life uprooted, and during one of the most vulnerable times in her life (puberty).

The New Girl is equal parts cute and relatable. It’s got that comforting and cozy vibe that young readers need, all while dealing with relatable and realistic everyday problems. This helps make things less terrifying and more approachable.

The characters, such as Lia, are sweet and entertaining, so it isn’t hard to get invested in their stories. More importantly, they’re pretty open about the things they experience, from body changes to fears about moving and more.

As for the artwork, it’s got that classic Cassandra Calin style. The vibrant colors pop off the pages, even when portraying an overall ordinary setting. It’s the perfect balance, if you ask me.
