By Night #4

By Night has not been the series I was expecting. I’m not sure why, but when I first read the description I was picturing something darker. That being said, I’ve been thrilled with what we’ve been given so far. It sort of reminds me of Lumberjanes in a way, only the characters are less naive. Not that this has stopped them from having fun jumping into random portals or anything.
While the tone has been lighter than anticipated, I’m still very much enjoying the plot. Last issue they revealed a bit more about the reason or why the portal exists. This issue we got to catch up with the girls and see more about the adventure they had last issue. Sort of – there’s no flashback, it’s just talked about. I’ll admit I’m more than a little curious about what really happened…but it is what it is I guess.
This issue didn’t really advance the plot all that much or at least it didn’t feel like it did. I strongly suspect that they’re going to come back through the portal into all sorts of trouble, but I could be wrong on that count. I’ll just have to keep reading to find out.
The artwork matches the tone of this series perfectly. The colors are all muted purples and blues – so there’s a lot of color without it being in your face about it. The style is perfect as well, with rounded and bold shapes being the dominant features. There is some shading going on, but it isn’t an overused effect.
